The Destructors - London - Old Misery’s House - Ironic setting due to the fact that the house has survived the “blitz” bombing during WWII. This historic event acts as foreshadowing indicating that destruction will be a focal point the short story.
How I Met My Husband - Between a rural and suburban setting in America - Setting shapes her character and her curiosity as she delves into a wealthier and less rural lifestyle.
Interpreter of Maladies - India, traveling to the Sun Temple, 1980s. - Mrs. Das finds herself in a foreign place. This allows the character to open up, move outside the constraints while not affecting her life at home.
The main characters of The Destructors is T. (Trevor) He was a gang member who ends up taking over the gang from Blackie because he comes up with an idea to destroy the Old Misery's (Mr. Thomas) house. T. can be described as quiet and creative living in the city. He is middle-lower class. Although T. is the main character, the most symapthtic people in the story are Blackie and Mr. Thomas.
Edie is the main character in "How I Met My Husband." She is a "hired girl" who works for Mr. and Mrs. Peebles- rich people living the "country life." She can be described as simple, uneducated, and naive... illustrated in her experience with Chris Watters. Edie is sympathetic because she is vulnerable and innocent.
Mr. Kapasi is the main character in Interpreter of Maladies. He is also the most sympathetic. He is 46 years old, has receding silver hair and is an Indian tour guide on Saturdays and Sundays. He is a doctors interpreter on other days. He has a tanned and unlined complexion and is interested in Mrs. Das. Mr. and Mrs. Das are young. They have three children(Tina, Ronnie, and Bobby). They are the children of Indians but grew up in America. They live in New Brunswik, NJ. They act more as brouther and sister to their children instead of parents. Mrs. Das is short, large, impatient and complaining. Mr. Das is a science teacher.
The Destructors -Trevor joins the gang as “T.” -Blackie, Mike, and Summers get chocolate from Mr. Thomas -T gets a tour of Mr. Thomas’ house. -T proposes destroying the house, becomes the leader instead of Blackie. -T assigns each member to bring saws, hammers, etc. -Boys are more organized under T’s leadership, orderly in their destruction. -Ruined the rooms, the boys left for home, T and Blackie find money, and burn it. -The next day they gutted the house and began to flood it. -Mr. Thomas’ is seen coming home early so they lure him into the outhouse and lock him in with food and a blanket. -T loses leadership, but they finish the house. -Next morning man starts to drive his car out of lot next to house and house is pulled down, man lets Thomas out of lav. :)
How I Met My Husband -A plane lands in the land next to the Peebles’ house. -Girl tells about her past and her coming to work for the Peebles and her situation before. (Her duties as a hired girl, while contrasting her life and that of the birds.) -Then Mrs. Peebles takes her children to Chesley to get a haircut and she sneaks into Mrs. Peebles’ clothes and makeup, but it caught and introduced to Chris Watters. -She sneaks back to Chris’ tent to convince him to not mention the incident and an attraction between them begins. -Chris and Edie met at the tent after Alice Kelling showed up and left for a picnic and they kissed. -Chris left and promised to send her a letter and Edie is accused of being intimate with him and Alice leaves. -Edie continues to wait for his letter for weeks and she ends up marrying the mailman. -Odd marriage FTW!!!!!!
Interpreter of Maladies -Mr. Kapasi is a man who works as apart time tour guide in India. -He meets a family (Das Family) -The two adults are very self-absorbed and immature. -It seems to Mr. Kapasi that it is just a big family of 5 kids. -They are going to the sun temple. -On the way Mrs. Das takes an interest in Mr. Kapasi’s other job (interpreting for a doctor) -She calls the job romantic and it spurs Mr. Kapasi’s train of thought. -He’s not happy with his wife. -He begins to become attracted to Mrs. Das. -This continues through lunch and at the sun temple. -She asks for his adress to send him pictures (he thinks that she wants to write as a relationship) -So they go to one more place so he gets more time with Mrs. Das. -The rest leave and she tells Mr. Kapasi one of the kids isn’t Mr. Das’. -Then monkeys attack the little boy. -Mr. Kapasi saves him. -The address flutter out of Mrs. Das’ bag and Mr. Kapasi views it as the end. :(
Mr. Dalton is an instructor in the Upper School at Beaufort Academy. He is inept at car repair and home or lawn maintanance of any sort, but is an accomplished philosopher. In his spare time he enjoys throwing darts while listening to old Duran Duran cassettes.
